DO SOMETHING: Speak out against hate -- Justice for Brisenia!!

Nine-year-old Brisenia Flores was murdered in her home in Arivaca, Arizona in May 2009. She pleaded, “Please don’t shoot me,” right before she was shot — point blank, in the face — by a member of the Minutemen American Defense Corps (MAD)1

The alleged mastermind behind Brisenia’s murder, Shawna Forde, has publicly represented anti-Latino hate groups including the Minutemen and the Federation of Americans for Immigration Reform (FAIR). Forde is currently on trial in Arizona for the murder of Brisenia and her father, Raul. As we speak, the jury is deliberating and will return a verdict within days, or hours.

What's devastating is that I just learned about the tragic story of Brisenia Flores. Her alleged murderer is on trial, but the main stream media has not taken much notice.

That's why I've downloaded a poster from Presente.org because they are highlighting her life and demanding that we say NO to hate.

Please join me! Post this picture and story on FaceBook, Twitter, on your own blogs and spread the word as much as you can!!

UPDATE

From Huffington Post:

An Arizona anti-illegal immigration activist was convicted on Monday of killing two Latinos during a 2009 raid: nine-year-old Brisenia Flores and her father, Raul Flores. The killer, Shawna Forde, is a member of the Minutemen, which patrols the southern border vigilante-style to detect illegal entry into the country.

Music Therapy with Miss Moon

Happy Monday, Everybody!!! It's a new week, ripe with opportunities to make sure the next seven days are beautiful! And what's more, it's Valentine's Day!!! Hooray!! This week's Music Therapy with Miss Moon choice is a very very special Valentine.

Have I mentioned my love of the borough I reside in? No? Yes? Well, let me say that I love Brooklyn!!! I cannot imagine living anywhere else but here. One day I am going to own a big, beautiful brownstone here in Bed-Stuy and come summer, you will find me on the stoop, chilling and blasting this song by Little Jackie.. "The Stoop". Enjoy!!

This stoop is my throne
This hood is my home
And the sky’s always blue by the brownstones
We in Brooklyn, it ain’t no Beverly Hills
Basically we pay bills, then chill
It’s like east coast bliss, its like west coast diss
We do it like this and you seal it with a kiss
And a pound, that’s just how it go down
It’s the protocol, do you feel me all?

Saturday afternoon we talk about the night before
And tonight we’re gonna do it some more
Sunday morning hear the bands in the church play
All day long, every block there’s a new song

Sitting on the stoop in Bed Stuy
Always sayin hi when the brothas walk by
Just proper etiquette
Sitting on the top step
With a bag of chips, sit back, relax, enjoy the trip
We got a neighborly philosophy
I don’t mess with you, you don’t mess with me
It is what it is, it ain’t all hard up in the hood
Sittin on my front stoop and its all good

Boys in wife beaters and corn rows
Wear their pants down low so their briefs can show
Girls be always dressed up
Giving their best stuff
Workin that hairdo
Boys are gonna bless you
Always some commotion at the corner store
That the corner cops chose to ignore
Everybody ride tune to a different song
When they pass by I bob my head along

I don't smoke spliffs but don’t mind the aroma
If the deli out of stella then I settle for corona
And I claim my spot for the evening
Let the part begin, we gonna do it again

Sitting on the stoop in Bed Stuy
Always sayin hi when the brothas walk by
Just proper etiquette
Sitting on the top step
With a bag of chips, sit back, relax, enjoy the trip
We got a neighborly philosophy
I don’t mess with you, you don’t mess with me
It is what it is, it ain’t all hard up in the hood
Sittin on my front stoop and its all good

Its all good
Its all good
Cause I l-l-l-l-love my hood
L-l-l-l-love my hood
Its all good
Its all good
Cause I l-l-l-l-love my hood
L-l-l-l-love my hood

Sitting on the stoop in Bed Stuy
Always sayin hi when the brothas walk by
Just proper etiquette
Sitting on the top step
With a bag of chips, sit back, relax, enjoy the trip
We got a neighborly philosophy
I don’t mess with you, you don’t mess with me
It is what it is, it ain’t all hard up in the hood
Sittin on my front stoop and its all good

A Little [BLESSID UNION OF SOULS] for a Saturday Night

Ladies, let me know if you feel me on this: Women, we have to be so strong sometimes. We have to be stoic and noble when all we want to do is stomp and cry and crawl into bed with a king size bag of M&M's (Okay, maybe that last part is just me! LOL)

The world is not always a gentle place. Throughout the week, we get pushed around commuting for work, cut off in traffic, ignored in front of the elevators, chastised by our bosses and ripped off by the girl in the checkout aisle. If you can grab a few minutes out of your day to have someone treat you gently, it's something you can really look forward to. If there's no one else around to do it, treat yourself gently.

This Saturday Night, let's let Blessid Union of Souls serve as the soundtrack to you being treated gently... by others and/or by yourself. I hope you all will enjoy "Hold Her Closer"!

D-I-Y Nappturaliciously: Celestial Crowns Shower Caps are the TRUTH!!!!

Me - circa 2004 or 2005

Back in my "Braided Beauty" days (Where my braids reached down to my tuchus!), taking a shower was always a hassle because no shower cap... no matter how JUMBO the packaging claimed to be, could fit my extensions comfortably, and by the time I left the shower, either my roots or the ends of my braids were sopping wet.

I have to take a shower.... and I am a crafty little thing, so I very quickly improvised by using plastic shopping bags (Ever get ink from the shopping bag's little smiley face all over your forehead?!? Not cute!), and white garbage bags (Which always made me look like a brown smurf, imho!)... One of the blessings of doing my version of the big chop (I call it "the big braid out" LOL) was that I could finally fit a shower cap... but only if kept my hair wrapped up.

Imagine my surprise when Margie L. Cattouse, the Owner of Celestial Crowns Shower Caps, reached out to me and offered me a shower cap to try out. I must admit, I was dubious.... not only do I have big hair, I have a BIG HEAD... and the combination makes it difficult for me to find a comfortable shower cap. I visited the site, and was bowled over by the heartfelt words of praise from Celestial Crown Chicas with locs and various natural hair styles:

"Thank you, thank you, thank you for celestial crown shower caps! Such a wonderful idea, all of my braids fit under the cap for the first time."

" Im one of the people at the hair show that couldn't believe their eyes. A shower cap for us w/ locs!!!"

" Thank you for making such a wonderful product I don't know what I would do without this Crown now that I have it I will never let it go. It makes my showering experience all the more better!"

With glowing recommendations like that, I would be a fool to turn down her generous offer. When Chris and I returned from our cruise, I was overjoyed to find my package (They come in the most beautiful packaging... little things like that really make a difference and makes the experience so much more enjoyable!!) and I couldn't wait to try my crown on for size!!

I've been using it every day for about a month and I must say... I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!! I never ever knew how much something as simple as a shower cap that fits comfortably can improve your day! After a long day at work, I no longer have to tie my hair up before hopping in the shower. I just have to slip on my Celestial Crown and wash that bad day away!!!

Me wearing my "Shower Up" Crown... I had such a blast taking this picture, I felt like I was modeling for a old soap commercial! LOL
