I am feeling in a bit of retro mood this Saturday night, but I really wanted to share some new music. Enter this week's selection, Dionne Bromfield, the 15-year-old protege (and godchild) of Amy Winehouse...
I hope that you all sit back, relax, and enjoy her song "Foolin" this Saturday Night.
Those who stand for nothing fall for anything. - Alexander Hamilton
It's another week, one full of opportunities to make each day count and live it to the fullest. This week's Music Therapy choice is by Sly and the Family Stone, and it's a song to help motivate you to make this week AWESOME!!! You can start by keeping your head up, taking time to laugh, and most important, always Stand.
Stand
In the end you'll still be you
One that's done all the things you set out to do
Stand
There's a cross for you to bear
Things to go through if you're going anywhere
Stand
For the things you know are right
Its the truth that the truth makes them so uptight
Stand
All the things you want are real
You have you to complete and there is no deal
Stand. stand, stand
Stand. stand, stand
Stand
You've been sitting much too long
There's a permanent crease in your right and wrong
Stand
There's a midget standing tall
And the giant beside him about to fall
Stand. stand, stand
Stand. stand, stand
Stand
They will try to make you crawl
And they know what you're saying makes sense and all
Stand
Don't you know that you are free
Well at least in your mind if you want to be
Happy Monday, Everyone! If you feel me on this, let me know:
Sometimes it seems that most of our time is spent at work. We give five days (or more!) to the J-O-B, and the remainder of us time is spent with our families, cleanings, doing laundry, running errands and if we're lucky... relaxing.
It can at times feel frustrating, but I am sure that most of you, like me have adopted an "It is what it is" state of mind: we pull up our bootstraps, put on our big girl (or big boy) drawers and do what we have to do... which for most of us is simply, "Living for the City" (See what I did there?! LOL). I hope that this week's song pick for Music Therapy will help to remind us all that as bad as we can sometimes feel we have it... there are many, many others out there you have it infinitely worse.
A boy is born in hard time Mississippi
Surrounded by four walls that ain't so pretty
His parents give him love and affection
To keep him strong moving in the right direction
Living just enough, just enough for the city...ee ha!
His father works some days for fourteen hours
And you can bet he barely makes a dollar
His mother goes to scrub the floor for many
And you'd best believe she hardly gets a penny
Living just enough, just enough for the city...yeah
His sister's black but she is sho 'nuff pretty
Her skirt is short but Lord her legs are sturdy
To walk to school she's got to get up early
Her clothes are old but never are they dirty
Living just enough, just enough for the city...um hum
Her brother's smart he's got more sense than many
His patience's long but soon he won't have any
To find a job is like a haystack needle
Cause where he lives they don't use colored people
Living just enough, just enough for the city...
Living just enough...
For the city...ooh,ooh
[repeat several times]
His hair is long, his feet are hard and gritty
He spends his love walking the streets of New York City
He's almost dead from breathing on air pollution
He tried to vote but to him there's no solution
Living just enough, just enough for the city...yeah, yeah, yeah!
I hope you hear inside my voice of sorrow
And that it motivates you to make a better tomorrow
This place is cruel no where could be much colder
If we don't change the world will soon be over
Living just enough, just enough for the city!!!!
La, la, la, la, la, la,
Da Ba Da Da Da Da Da Da
Da Da Da Da Da Da
Da Ba Da Da Da Da Da Da Da
[Repeat to end]
Forty years ago today, the world lost the genius that was James Marshall Hendrix. I couldn't think of a better song selection for this particular Saturday Night than Jimi's "Angel".
I hope you all will listen like I am and think of Jimi.
Arthur Lee and Love are one of those groups that everyone should know about, but sadly... that's not the case. I admit to being a newbie to their music (reading about them in the AWESOME book "Rip it Up: the Black Experience in Rock'n'Roll" by Kandia Crazy Horse.)
In researching the group, I was shocked to discover one of my favorite songs from the "High Fidelity" was from Love. Of course, this is the song I am sharing with you today. I hope you all will enjoy "Always See Your Face" by Arthur Lee and Love.
My name is Audrey. I have been called many, many things. My Pirate Sistahs dubbed me Pirate Yemaya Chalice Moon, Mother of the Secret Realm (or Yemmy for short), which I remixed P-Diddy style into Miss Moon the Brooklyn Geechee. This blog is basically all about me and my life. I call it the rantings, ramblings and revelations of your average Brooklyn Geechee.
I have a lot of interests, and I admittedly get a bit dorky about them. So this blog will be about music, movies, politics, tv, getting healthy, and as Lisa Jones dubbed her book Bulletproof Diva (a must read!)... tales of race, sex, and hair.
I hope you like it. And if not, I welcome constructive criticism.
My only rule is be nice or leave.
