Checking In...

Hey Everybody!

As I am sure you all know, Miss Moon's Musings has been on hiatus for the last several months. This is because I am presently without internet access in my house.

Last summer, the frequent rain caused leaking in our apartment, which resulted in two large gaping holes in our ceiling. Our living room ceiling wasn't the only fatality as our home computer (and the modem) was totally fried as well. The holes are still very present on the ceiling as I write these words... Seriously.

My family and I were hoping that we would move out by the end of last year, but I also received a giant middle finger from the Universe in the form of losing my job. After putting my health scare on a shelf for the sake of pitching in and being loyal to my former employer... they kicked me to the curb, along with countless others.

Fast Forward to March, I am still stuck in this apartment that shows no signs of being repaired any time soon, I am diligently searching for a great job, and most importantly I am working on myself. I believe that a lot of the hardships that have come is a sign that I need to focus on what I am doing to create struggle. I am committed to breaking some negative patterns in my life. I feel like this could be my last chance to start over... and I really don't want to screw it up. I am working on a major life overhaul, and despite missing the blog, I need to really put my focus on fixing this mess.

So Miss Moon's Musings will continue to be on hiatus for the time being. You can feel free to keep in touch with me on Instagram, Twitter, and of course, the Miss Moon's Musings FaceBook page, as I am always on Instagram and Twitter (Especially on "Scandal" night! lol) and have vowed to be more active on Facebook as well.

I really just wanted to check in and say that I'm alive and that Miss Moon's Musings is NOT dead!!!

Miss Moon's Musings Third Birthday Giveaway: Day One!!!

Whoo Hooo!!! Today is the THIRD ANNIVERSARY of Miss Moon's Musings!!!! It seems like only yesterday that this blog was created. Where does the time go?!?

I started my blog on this day, way back in 2009 for a very good reason. June 9th is also the day one of my greatest she-ro's in the world, my late Grandmother Vivian was born. I thought it would be awesome to celebrate my blog's birthday and her birthday each year! And it has been! :)

My Grandmother (with Grandpa, of course!) on a date way back in the day. As you can see... I am definitely "Vivian 2.0"! It always astonishes me how much I look like her!

Three is definitely a magic number to me, so I knew that I wanted to make this third birthday a very, very special one. So I reached out to some of my favorite shops online and asked if they wanted to join in on the fun. To my utter delight, they did! So with great excitement, I hereby announce.... the Miss Moon's Musings Third Birthday Giveaway!!! Yippeee!!!

That's right, y'all!!! For the next SEVEN days, at three o'clock p.m., I will be posting a new giveaway with some AMAZING gifts you will have the opportunity to score! Miss Moon's Musing About: My "Just Joan" Christmas...

My Christmas was very much inspired by the "Just Joan" episode of the television series "Girlfriends":

When Joan complains about the dating scene and her social life, Maya challenges her to empower herself, accept her singleness and go out to a trendy restaurant alone.

I decided that being newly single during the holidays did NOT have to be something to feel sorry for myself about! What better gift to give myself on Christmas than the gift of empowerment?!?!? So I got myself all dolled up and headed out on Christmas afternoon.. complete with my new favorite lipstick!!!!

Yes, y'all... I was rockin' a red lip on Christmas!!!!!!! I couldn't afford to dine at a fancy bistro, so I decided to do something within my price range.

So I took myself to the movies. I saw "The Darkest Hour" in 3D... It was actually a pretty good movie. I had a blast sitting in the front of the theatre with my popcorn and soda... dressed up to watch this adventure.

After the movie I walked around Downtown Brooklyn... And it didn't feel awkward, or pathetic to be walking around by myself on Christmas, in fact I saw a lot of people doing it.

It was an amazing day, and one I am very proud of myself about. There's a stigma with many women about going out by themselves to the movies or even to dinner, as Joan expressed in the episode of Girlfriends. Even my Mum who is in her 60s remarked that she had never dined out or gone to the movies alone before. She looked at me with a bit of pride, I think... as I decided to take the holiday into my own hands and set out on my own adventure that day.

Do I feel tremendously empowered? I will say this... I did have a kick ass Christmas, and that alone is empowering!!

Miss Moon's Musings is Two Years Old Today!!!!

I cannot believe it, but two years ago today, I published my very first post for this blog, aptly entitled, "About Me: So What the Eff's a Brooklyn Geechee?!?" LOL I started the blog on June 9th, because it is also the birthday of someone very important and special to me - my grandmother, Vivian (I miss you, Grandma!).

622 (!!) posts later, I find myself here writing these words, full of emotions. I've always been the VERY reserved and quiet type of Scorpio, and this blog has, in many ways helped me to open up a bit. I'm not the social butterfly I'd like to be, yet... but baby steps!!! I'm a big girl with natural hair who is constantly trying to improve herself. Starting Miss Moon's Musings has allowed me to be myself, without fear of reproach or condemnation.

I am so immensely grateful to all of you who dig the pieces of my life I've shared with you thus far: The rantings, ramblings and revelations that swirl around my head as I clickety-clack away at my laptop. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart to the people who have followed from the beginning. Thank you and welcome to my newest followers. I can't wait to discover what the third year of Miss Moon's Musings will bring with you all!!!!!!

I'm REALLY Diggin': MOO.com's Business Cards

I want to really take Miss Moon's Musings as far as it's willing to go, and I recognize that a HUGE part of getting my bloggy baby noticed is to get out there, stop being such a cloistered wallflower and spread the word as much as possible. I first spotted MOO.com's beautiful cards reading the FANTABULOUS blog, Fashion Nette-work (Shout out to Juanette!!), and was so bowled over by her beautiful cards... I decided to venture forward to their website to see how they can create something as fabulous for me.

Creating my card's design was super easy (I have no idea how to use Photoshop, so my design was created using Picasa and MS Paint (I'm working with what works for me! LOL). It took a couple of tries, but I finally got it where the images were high-resolution and could fit the parameters of the card well.

A few weeks after submitting my order for printing, I received my cards in the mail and was instantly bowled over at the super-cute cases they came in!!!

The Green Uploader Case fits neatly in my purse without getting bent crinkled and otherwise look like poopie when handing them out (SOOO not a good look!). The cards themselves?!?!? Check 'em out!!!

Here are the backs of the cards. I decided to use the design elements from the blog's header. I thought it would be a great way to introduce people to the site, as when they visit from getting the card, they'll (I hope!) recognize the theme!

Here's the front of the card. I decided to keep it simple while still displaying some of the elements for the site on the card!!

I decided to get only 50 cards this time around to see if I'd like them. For $30 these cards are exceptional and I will be upgrading and purchasing new cards again as I need them!!

Would you like to get some MOO.com business cards for yourself?!?!? Be the first to leave a comment and you will win a 20% off coupon code (Many Thanks to Moo.com for providing me with the code to share with a very special reader!!!) Best of Luck everyone!!!

Miss Moon's Musing About: My Five Fall Must-Haves!!

Summer is on its way out the door here in Brooklyn. The leaves on the trees (The trees that are still standing, that is - what was up with that tornado yesterday!?!? Yikes!!) are starting to change color, people are starting to wear jackets more and the weather has a crisp, brisk feeling to it.

In preparing for the change in season, I've stocked up on some goodies recently that I thought I would share (these are in no particular order)!

To usher in the Autumn, I've said "See ya later, alligator" to Essie's Mint Candy Apple and have welcomed in three exciting new nail polish colors for fall (These count as one of the five, fyi... LOL):

From Essie's Fall 2010 Collection, I snapped up Merino Cool, a color I'd describe as a taupe-y, lavender-y shade.

From O.P.I.'s Swiss Collection (Fall/Winter 2010), I selected two colors, Ski Teal We Drop and The Color to Watch

I am looking forward to combining the two O.P.I colors together... I think this fall I am going to be bold and try out a two-finger Blackberry Bling look. After all, I have a Blackberry! LOL

I have been hearing oodles and oodles of rave reviews about Mixed Chicks products, so I decided that I will give their Deep Conditioner a try. I actually have it in my hair as I type this blog entry!

My hair was lapping this stuff up as I was applying it to my hair. I was super exhausted last weekend, so I decided to give my hair a break and go two weeks without doing the whole wash-deep condition-braid routine. Suffice to say, my hair was an oily, stringy, product-laden mess tonight and my hair was so grateful for the attention (Lesson learned - I will never do that again! LOL).

Of course time will tell if this Deep Conditioner is up to the challenge of moisturizing and nurturing my thirsty curls, so be on the lookout for an official review in a few weeks!

In my never-ending quest to find a lipcolor that will last a) my cigarette habit, b) my propensity for constantly swigging from my bottled water and c) my overall awkward clumsiness...without crumbling and feeling dry... My lips are grateful for Revlon Colorstay's Overtime Lipcolor. I selected #26 - Perennial Plum. I really love how the color looks on my lips!!!

Ever since Essence Magazine provided a sneak peak of Terry McMillan's sequel to "Waiting to Exhale", I have been waiting with anticipation for the release of "Getting to Happy" this month. Thanks to a "just-because" gift of a $25 Borders Gift Card, I was able to snatch it up this week.

I started reading the book on the subway after work... and finished it around 1:00 AM that same night. It was a total page turner!!! It was exciting to see what's become of Savannah, Bernadine, Gloria and Robin, and I must say, Miss Terry did not disappoint!

Last but certainly not least, I took one look at Old Navy's Women's Plus Embellished Cardigans and knew it would be mine. I picked up the cardigan in Mauve Over and can see myself rocking it to work with a black camisole and slacks, or possibly with jeans and a graphic tee (with the right accessories and color scheme, I think it's doable!)

So, there's my list for Fall. I enjoyed making this entry, so this may be something I do every season (If there's an interest, of course!). I'd love to hear from you about the hair and beauty products, fashion, movies, music, books (or anything!) you're excited about this season. Leave a comment and let me know!!!

***********************UPDATE**************************

I am a woman of my word. In doing my Saturday Night manicure, I decided to give the Blackberry Bling a shot and I used my newest O.P.I acquisitions, Ski Teal We Drop and The Color to Watch. Since I was snapping pictures, I decided to try on the Revlon Colorstay Overtime Lipcolor in Perennial Plum to show that off too!

I really like the color combination. I decided to use the darker Ski Teal We Drop for the ring/thumb, because my toenails are completely that color.

In this picture are three of the five products listed above: The nail polish on my nails, lip color on my lips and of course, my hair was deep conditioned using Mixed Chicks Deep Conditioner. I braided my hair with Carol's Daughter Loc Butter, because Kizzi Stay-Put Hair Pomade is nowhere to be found (Rumor has it that it's being reformulated!). Any Kizzi fans will take heart in knowing that Loc Button is very similar and will yield the same results.

Venturing further off-topic, I was contemplating adding the caftan I am wearing to the list. Ever since I bought it from a local street vendor for ten bucks, I have been rocking it like it's a uniform! (Yes... I've washed it! LOL)

Miss Moon's Musing About: Makeover Madness!!

I'm back, y'all!!! Did you miss me?!?! LOL

As I'm sure you've noticed, Miss Moon's Musings has had a makeover!! The terrifically wonderful Rachel from Ladybird Blog Designs is the Blogger Beauty Magician responsible for the transformation.

She took my crazily jumbled-up, confused, all-over-the-place ideas for my blog, and she transformed it into something I am so very proud of. I am so grateful for her wonderful work, and if any of you are considering giving your blog a makeover, look no further!

In the past few days, I have a bunch of music I want to share (Have y'all heard Cee Lo's "F@%*k You"? D-O-P-E, DOPE!!!!!), a make up moment or two, and so much more!!!

Thank you and welcome to all my readers, new and old... I look forward to sharing my rantings, ramblings and revelations with you all.

Music Therapy with Miss Moon

Today marks a very special Music Therapy with Miss Moon. One year ago today, I posted my first blog on Miss Moon's Musings (Or M3, as I call it in my head), introducing myself to anyone who was interested in getting to know me. A year later, 318 posts, 40-something followers (which continues to amaze me!) and the surprising and humbling honor of being listed as one of the Top 50 Natural Hair Bloggers on NetworkedBlogs... I hope that all of you have enjoyed my rantings, ramblings and revelations as much as I have enjoyed sharing them. I plan on continuing this blog for as long as I can and as long as you all will want to read this jujumagumbo!!!

To celebrate my bloggy baby's first birthday (and because I am currently sick in bed watching "Meatloaf: Behind the Music") I decided to pick one of my favorite Meatloaf songs for this week edition of Music Therapy with Miss Moon... "Paradise by the Dashboard Light", which is a kick-ass, fun song to sing along with!! I hope you will enjoy!!! Thank you all for a wonderful first year!!!
