“Hope is important because it can make the present moment less difficult to bear. If we believe that tomorrow will be better, we can bear a hardship today.”
~ Thich Nhat Hanh
Solange may be cuckoo for T.O.N.Y, but for me, it's all about tomorrow. Why? Because today sucks sometimes. Not always, but lately, it seems to have reached its peak in suckiness. And rather than get back in bed and pull the covers over my head, I can muddle through with the belief that tomorrow will be better. And this week's Music Therapy song choice shares that same sentiment. This is a song that I was obsessed with as a child.
I had children's books of classic Disney movies that came with cassette tapes to accompany them and I played "The Rescuers" over and over again, just because of this song. Even as a little bitty, it filled me with tremendous peace and optimism. Having recently rediscovered the song as an adult a few weeks ago, I am overjoyed to have discovered the magic of the tune remains. I hope that "Tomorrow Is Another Day" (vocals by Shelby Flint) will give you the same joy.

Come along..
Will there be sun shine shining?
Will we find a silver lining?
Come along..
Sing a song.
When today becomes tomorrow,
Will we find joy or sorrow?
Sing a song.
Is it wrong..
To put all our hopes together?
To wish for something better?
Is it wrong...
To belong?
To face the future with another,
Who means more than any other,
Is to belong.
We'll paint the grey clouds with pretty rainbow hues,
And we'll brush the gloom away,
And save it for a rainy day,
Rainy day..
Oh today...
When troubles cast a shadow,
And shadows make the sun afraid to stay,
It's ok,
'Cause there'll be sunshine shining
And we'll find a silver lining,
Another day.
Tomorrow is another day, how i hope you'll always stay.

Champions of Crackheadedness: Save Our Souls
So this clip has been circulating around the Blackternet (that's black internet, y'all) for a few days and what I find most shocking is not so much the behavior of little Tangueray and Cristal (That's the names I've given them!)... but the comments this video has inspired out of people. This is one example:
"If I ever caught my daughter doing that shit, I'd beat her azz so hard, she won't have no azz to make jump!"
Here's my problem with that. If you are raising your daughters right and instilling in them love of self... you wouldn't catch them booty popping in a children's party. Tangueray and Cristal was taught by someone that this was not only acceptable, but that it was adorable and a great way to get attention. Yes!! Let's teach of prepubescent daughters how to sexualize themselves for attention. Why wait for the media to do it?!?!?
Frankly, if anyone deserves to get their asses beat (and I don't condone violence).. it's their Mamas. But I have a feeling that these women have been exposed to enough violence in their worlds, so perhaps what I would really do is enroll both Mothers and Daughters into a Self Esteem workshop.
We need some more Iyanla Vanzant's in the world... a lot less booty tootin' sistahs!!!

Dreaming of Jellies...

If I were to die today, in a manner similar to Charles Foster Kane... I think instead of the famous "Roooose Buuuuuud"... my dying words would be vastly different, though (dare I presume) equally cryptic:
"Jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeellllllllllllllllliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees"
I was born in 1977. This makes me definitely a child of the 80s. And one of the fashion trends of the era I never got to participate in (thanks to maternal disapproval) was the wearing of jelly sandals. And I got to wear almost all the trends:
- Michael Jackson glove? Check.
- Remember the colorful, plastic charm necklaces? I was rockin' em.
- Eva Joia clothes? Oui Oui
- Acid Wash? Uhhhh... yeah
The only thing seriously missing from my style arsenal was jellies. And everytime I think about it, I feel a pang of regret.
I remember watching other little girls walk around in their jellies, and thinking they look so cute. I was reflecting on that a few minutes ago, and I decided, "Damnit, I'm 31 years old... I am going to get my arse a pair of Jellies".... LOL
So if you know of anyplace that sells the old school style mary jane jellies, drop me a line! I will be sure to post pics!
