Happy Saturday, Everybody!! I'm back with another of my favorite female musicians. Those of you who know me personally know my love and adoration for Neneh Cherry. Her albums sincerely got me through my teen years! And I've always said this... that as a (sometimes) musician, if I could get away with doing an entire album of Neneh covers, I SO would!! And I would start with tonight's song. I hope you all will enjoy the beautiful and melodious, "Move with Me"!!

A Little [BROWNSTONE] for a Saturday Night
Happy Saturday, Beautiful Friends!! Today's song choice for a Saturday night is one that I am super duper excited to be sharing. This song, in fact, is one I've been wanting to use for this post for several years, but hadn't been able to find it on YouTube until recently.
I actually own the cassette single of this song (Yes folks... your friend Audrey is OLD!!), and because I unfortunately do not own a cassette player (Or a CD player for that matter... I'm totally Ms. iPod!), I hadn't heard it for sometime. Until recently, by sheer happenstance, this particular version of the song was a suggested video for me. I clicked the link and upon hear the opening chords, I yelled "Yessss!!!", and instantly decided that tonight I will share Brownstone's beautiful rendition of the Eagles' classic, "I can't tell you why". Enjoy!!

Music Therapy with Miss Moon
“Hope is important because it can make the present moment less difficult to bear. If we believe that tomorrow will be better, we can bear a hardship today.”
~ Thich Nhat Hanh
Solange may be cuckoo for T.O.N.Y, but for me, it's all about tomorrow. Why? Because today sucks sometimes. Not always, but lately, it seems to have reached its peak in suckiness. And rather than get back in bed and pull the covers over my head, I can muddle through with the belief that tomorrow will be better. And this week's Music Therapy song choice shares that same sentiment. This is a song that I was obsessed with as a child.
I had children's books of classic Disney movies that came with cassette tapes to accompany them and I played "The Rescuers" over and over again, just because of this song. Even as a little bitty, it filled me with tremendous peace and optimism. Having recently rediscovered the song as an adult a few weeks ago, I am overjoyed to have discovered the magic of the tune remains. I hope that "Tomorrow Is Another Day" (vocals by Shelby Flint) will give you the same joy.
http://youtu.be/lvoDOHhgaGY
Come along..
Will there be sun shine shining?
Will we find a silver lining?
Come along..
Sing a song.
When today becomes tomorrow,
Will we find joy or sorrow?
Sing a song.
Is it wrong..
To put all our hopes together?
To wish for something better?
Is it wrong...
To belong?
To face the future with another,
Who means more than any other,
Is to belong.
We'll paint the grey clouds with pretty rainbow hues,
And we'll brush the gloom away,
And save it for a rainy day,
Rainy day..
Oh today...
When troubles cast a shadow,
And shadows make the sun afraid to stay,
It's ok,
'Cause there'll be sunshine shining
And we'll find a silver lining,
Another day.
Tomorrow is another day, how i hope you'll always stay.

A Little [NEW LOOK] for a Saturday Night
What's better than feeling in a nostalgic mood and discovering new music that fulfills that need? Those of you that have checked out the Miss Moon's Musing FaceBook page (If you haven't, check it out.. it's fun!!) will probably remember I posting this song last week. The first thing I thought when hearing it (and many I know have shared the same sentiment) was, "This is a NEW song?!?!".
This song gives me all kinds of Free-Style, 80's DOPENESS and I couldn't imagine a better song to shake my booty to this Saturday Night. I hope you all will join me in shaking away to New Look's, "Janet".

Music Therapy with Miss Moon
There are certain songs that just trigger memories of my High School days.
They weren't all great, but I listen to a certain song, and can think back to riding the B67 bus down Seventh Avenue in Brooklyn on my way to school, listening to a mix tape I made on my Walkman.
This week's music therapy selection is one that got serious rotation in my teens. Listening to it today at 32(about to turn 33), I still get that "First Day of School" feeling... where I'm dressed in the best outfit my Mum and I picked out, and the biggest worry in my life was that my crush du jour had no idea I existed! LOL

I hope you will enjoy "Linger" by The Cranberries. The first song in Miss Moon's Mixtape: 90s Playlist. (Coming soon... Possibly!) What song would YOU add?!?!?

DOPE: "Sometimes Silence Is The Loudest Kind Of Noise" by Bassey Ikpi
This poem by Bassey Ikpi just evokes all of the wonderful moments about being a child: the safety, the excitement, the hopefulness. Enjoy!!!

Sometimes silence is the loudest kind of noise
Like sometimes it was best when
Girls were girls and boys were boys.
Like back when freeze tag was a mating dance.
Like back when "Do Over" meant you got another chance.
Like back when anxiety was worrying if Wonder Woman would make it out alive.
Like back when freedom was sliding backwards on a slide.
Like back when success was jumping off a swing and
Landing on your feet, then
Doing it all over again.
Like new shoes made you run faster.
Like getting Ms. Gross again for math was a disaster.
Like failure was a word we hadn't even learned to spell yet.
Like promises were sealed and kept with pinky bets.
Like a challenge was a double dare.
Like ugly was a cock-eyed stare.
And you liked it...
Like when you flipped your eyelids inside out
To impress that boy across the room,
'Cause that's all it took.
And there was no such thing as too soon,
As long as you checked the right box in that note from across the room,
The one that he...passed her.
Back when, "I don't know, maybe" was a legitimate answer.
Back when, "I need space" meant he needed more elbow room to draw,
So he got on the floor and he colored outside the lines.
Like the lines of color were on the floor,
So we just existed in sandboxes and playgrounds.
And we hop-scotched and dodgeballed
And everything I needed to know, I learned in a shopping mall.
Like don't wander off on your own,
Like know who you are,
Like know where you came from,
Like never let go of your mother's hand no matter what you do,
Like if you get lost, just stand there until someone finds you,
And someone will always look for you
Because someone will always miss you
And someone will always find you
And when you cry, someone will always remind you
In that quiet, quiet lullaby voice,
That sometimes silence is the loudest kind of noise.

A Little [OTIS REDDING] for a Saturday Night
One of my favorite memories growing up is of my mother breaking out her records to do her weekend cleaning. She had a fabulous collection of 45s and LPs that she had collected since she was a teenager.
Her fabulous collection unfortunately was destroyed when our building collapsed 16 years ago, but my mind always lingers to her favorites and my favorites, and the favorites we have in common, like "I've Been Loving You Too Long" by Otis Redding... Enjoy!!!

Music Therapy with Miss Moon
This week's song is one that comes straight from my childhood. I call songs like this "Mix 105 Songs", after the now defunct radio station here in NYC. My Mum used to play Mix 105 in the morning, so my time spent getting ready for school was seasoned with the hits from the "70s, 80s and today" (Mix 105's old tag line)

A Little [MARY J BLIGE] for a Saturday Night
Even though it's Sunday.... God, I remember when "What's the 411?" first came out. My girl Natasha hipped me to Mary J. Blige, playing "You Remind Me"... I actually think she got me the album. I played it on my little cd boombox to DEATH!!! This song instantly evokes Saturday nights spent laying on my bed, reading magazines, day dreaming and singing along with Miss Mary J. Blige.
I am going to dedicate this edition of "for a Saturday Night" to Natasha, with a very special "Happy Birthday" love shout!!!

Miss Moon's Musing About: Adulthood (As Seen on TV)
I am 32 years old... so I have been an adult for over a decade now. And I can honestly say that until very recently, I did not enjoy my adult years. My 20s, put plainly, sucked. And I blame Hollywood for it. LOL
It all started when I was 17 years old and saw the movie "Reality Bites"... About Gen X College Graduates going out into the Real World! Man, was Janeane Garofalo, Ethan Hawke and Winona Ryder cool as hell! I envisioned my life being a chocolate-coated version of the movie!

I wanted to be just as creative and quirky and counter-cultural as they were.... until 2007. And then..... I saw "Love Jones"!!! Whooooo, chile!

I was 20 years old and I thought the Universe was sending me a celluloid version of what I had in store for the next decade. The passion, the culture, the music, the dope ass, awesome life!

All-in-all, I really shouldn't complain. My twenties weren't so horrifically bad. I did a lot of growth work, which has made me the woman I am today. And my life is pretty damn terrific now.
So instead of kvetching about my 20s, I will end this trip back to the 90s with two of my favorite songs from "Reality Bites" and "Love Jones".... enjoy, y'all.
Squeeze "Tempted"
Lauryn Hill "The Sweetest Thing"
Peace from Brooklyn!

Sadly, my 20s was not as eventful or passionate as Nia Long's character, Nina. Which I guess could be a blessing in disguise, since she spent the entire movie pining for Darius (Larenz Tate), only to finally get it together a year later, being drenched in the cold cold rain.... sorry if I'm giving a spoiler! LOL

This song brings back the best memories of High School for me. Sheryl Crow really crossed over with this song, because Lord knows Sistahs were jamming to this in Brooklyn (I know this sistah was!)
This song (mumblemumble) years later continues to be fun, summery and just makes me want to dance and cough at the same time! LOL

Dreaming of Jellies...

If I were to die today, in a manner similar to Charles Foster Kane... I think instead of the famous "Roooose Buuuuuud"... my dying words would be vastly different, though (dare I presume) equally cryptic:
"Jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeellllllllllllllllliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees"
I was born in 1977. This makes me definitely a child of the 80s. And one of the fashion trends of the era I never got to participate in (thanks to maternal disapproval) was the wearing of jelly sandals. And I got to wear almost all the trends:
- Michael Jackson glove? Check.
- Remember the colorful, plastic charm necklaces? I was rockin' em.
- Eva Joia clothes? Oui Oui
- Acid Wash? Uhhhh... yeah
The only thing seriously missing from my style arsenal was jellies. And everytime I think about it, I feel a pang of regret.
I remember watching other little girls walk around in their jellies, and thinking they look so cute. I was reflecting on that a few minutes ago, and I decided, "Damnit, I'm 31 years old... I am going to get my arse a pair of Jellies".... LOL
So if you know of anyplace that sells the old school style mary jane jellies, drop me a line! I will be sure to post pics!

- Audrey...Miss Moon's Musings
- Brooklyn, New York, United States
- My name is Audrey. I have been called many, many things. My Pirate Sistahs dubbed me Pirate Yemaya Chalice Moon, Mother of the Secret Realm (or Yemmy for short), which I remixed P-Diddy style into Miss Moon the Brooklyn Geechee. This blog is basically all about me and my life. I call it the rantings, ramblings and revelations of your average Brooklyn Geechee. I have a lot of interests, and I admittedly get a bit dorky about them. So this blog will be about music, movies, politics, tv, getting healthy, and as Lisa Jones dubbed her book Bulletproof Diva (a must read!)... tales of race, sex, and hair. I hope you like it. And if not, I welcome constructive criticism. My only rule is be nice or leave.
