Solange has inspired me once again to put together a plus size fashionistas post after a super duper long time!!! I love mixed patterns with a passion, but haven't had the chutzpah to try it out for myself. I might be brave and attempt this look of Solange's. Here's how I put together the outfit:
It's summertime, and between the heat, taking walks, and over-all laziness when it comes to Ms. Mooch, I do believe it is HIGH time for a good ole fashioned BRAID-cation! Can you believe it's been two years since my last one?!?
This time around, I decided to attempt to recreate Solange's beautiful box braids, as I think it's a versatile, fun, and the perfect style for summer. So of course, this post is all about the Solo Braids, man!
I will be putting my braids in this weekend, so next week, be sure to check out the post next week. What do you think of Solange's braids? Would you rock them or knock them?!?
“We've got to learn hard things in our lifetime, but it's love that gives you the strength. It's being nice to people and having a lot of fun and laughing harder than anything, hopefully every single day of your life.”
~ Drew Barrymore
"Live and work but do not forget to play, to have fun in life and really enjoy it."
~ Eileen Caddy
"Fun is good."
~ Dr. Seuss
I've been working my but off lately. With "Getting Healthy", blogging, job searching and taking care of business around Casa di Miss Moon, there's a lot going on for me. One thing that is never EVER in short supply, however, is fun. I try to have fun and laugh as much as I can every single day.
It's easy to rush around feeling stressed about life, but what I've discovered is that when you have fun, it makes the challenges of the day a lot easier to deal with. So when I am tired from walking 8 miles, cooking dinner and cranking out resumes, I take time to devote myself to some fun. I veg out with my main man Spongebob Squarepants for an hour, I play with makeup and snap photos ("America's Next Top Model" style) or I listen to music on my iPod.... or Music Therapy, if you will! LOL
And speaking of Music Therapy, this week's song choice is dedicated to having fun and feeling great in the process. Even if you take a moment to read this blog post and listen to the song, be proud of yourself to dedicating less than 10 minutes of an otherwise busy day for something fun. And I hope that it IS fun for you, and why wouldn't it be? After all, it's the terrific Solange Knowles!!! I picked one of her songs that always lifts my spirits. This song just makes me so damn HAPPY!! In fact, it's one of my favorite songs to dance and sing a long to... Fun times! Please enjoy, "Sandcastle Disco". And have fun today... You deserve it!
Who would've known, the wind and the sunshine
Would oh baby, baby
Build up these walls of mine
And I can't see you or breathe you
Cause there's trouble right beneath you
It's all in the night
But oh baby, baby
Come pick me up in your ride
I'm a cool low Jane
With the skip on my feet
I play tough as nails
With my heart on my sleeve
I'm nothing but a sand castle
Baby don't blow me away, away
Baby I know, you do that to all the girls
You know that I'm fragile, oh
Bay ba ba ba baby, don't blow me away
Baby I know, you do that to all the girls
You know that I'm fragile, oh
Bay ba ba ba baby, don't blow me away
Who would've known, the storm of my past time
Would oh baby, make me
Losing the song of the eye
And I can't believe you or read you
Cause there's pleasure in your preview
It's all in your eyes
But oh Mr. DJ, baby
Can you meet me outside
You're an old school dude
With the kick on ya shoes
You've got groove in ya hands
The way you spend those tunes
I'm nothing but a sandcastle
Baby don't blow me away, away
Baby I know, you do that to all the girls
Baby I'm fragile, oh
Bay ba ba ba baby, don't blow me away
Baby I know, you do that to all the girls
You know that I'm fragile, oh
Bay ba ba ba baby, don't blow me away
Ooh, and just like the ocean
Lays right there behind me
Look over my sandcastle
And there's a sight to see
Don't blow me away
Don't blow me baby
Ooh baby I know, you do that to all the girls
You know that I'm fragile, oh
Bay ba ba ba baby, don't blow me away
Baby I know, you do that to all the girls
You know that I'm fragile, oh
Bay ba ba ba baby, please don't blow me away
Hooray! It's the first (and probably not the last!) Solange Knowles inspired post of 2012! I made it to March without recreating one of her outfits. How's THAT for self-control?!? LOL
When I saw this photo of Solange spinning at the grand opening of the Miu Miu store in Houston, I literally was like, "I was trying to wait... But... Eff it... I'm recreating that for plus size fashionistas!" And recreate it, I did! Of course, Solange is rocking Miu Miu, but here's what I have come up with:
Dress: Joe Browns Ditsy Print Dress ($89.00, Simply Be) Shoes: Blue White Multi Fabric Gingham Print T Strap Platform Heels ($12.99, Ami Club Wear) Earrings: Beaded French Wire Earrings ($3.80, Forever 21)
You can complete the look with my new favorite lipstick shade! I'm contemplating taking a braid-cation this spring, and boy is Solange's Goddess braids tempting me. LOL What do you think, guys... should I go for it?!?
Every time I swear to myself that under no circumstances will I recreate another of her looks for the rest of year, she comes up with a look that makes me go "Yesssssss!!!!!". And from there, I can't fight it.
I spotted this picture of Solange shopping in New York City with the familia and was bowled over by how comfy/chic the look was... and if you all know one thing about me by now, it's that I'm ALL ABOUT the comfy/chic!!! Here's my interpretation of her look:
Top: Women's Plus Cowl-Neck Tops in Crimson and Clover ($26.94, Old Navy) Skirt: Jessica London Pencil Skirt in Animal Print ($49.99 - $54.99, One Stop Plus) Bag: GUESS Fallon Small Carryall in Cognac Multi($118.00, Macy's) Shoes: Women's Bianca Ankle Strap Flat in Tan ($24.99, Payless) Sunnies: Brown/Brown Sunglasses ($5.80, Forever 21)
If you have an outfit you'd like me to try to recreate for plus size fashionistas, drop me a line via email, Twitter, or on the Miss Moon's Musings Facebook page.
By now most of you have seen the recent photo of Solange Knowles with her son Jules attending the INC International Concepts at Macy’s press preview held at the Openhouse Gallery yesterday. The internet has been all abuzz about her fly as hell ensemble choice for the evening. I even posted the pic on the Miss Moon's Musings FaceBook page!
My first instinct was to not recreate this look, purely because I've done her outfits A LOT in the past few months (She's been killing me softly with her style, what can I say?!?!). But I could not resist, there was no use fighting it! LOL
Here's what I used:
Sweater: INC International Concepts Three Quarter Sleeve Colorblocked Sweater ($69.50, Macy's) Pants: (Thanks to Jay the Bohemian Diva!!) Avenue Signature Capri in Buttercream ($19.99, One Stop Plus) Shoes: Katy Bow Wedge ($29.99, Payless) Purse: Matt & Nat Stardust Santogold ($107.25, Zappos)
For my readers sizes 8-14, Asos also has a fantastic pair of capris! And the sweater is available in Misses' sizes, too! Thanks again to Jay to hooking me up with the capris!!
Happy Saturday, Everybody!!!! I cannot believe we've reached the first Saturday in August already. It seems like only yesterday I was getting the last minutes items crammed into my suitcase for the Western Caribbean cruise Chris and I went on in January. This year has gone by tremendously quickly!
Reliving the moments of my cruise puts me in the mood to take a mental vacation. As I am imagining myself on a beach laying on the cool sand, the moon high above me, Chris at my side and a cool (and potent) drink in my hand... you can best believe that this week pick for a Saturday Night is playing somewhere in the background.
There's plenty of room on Miss Moon's beach: pull up a blanket, light a bonfire (I call first dibs on the s'mores!), and imagine a night of beautiful ocean waves, laughter, and relaxation. Your boarding pass is a click away, so check out "Flying Overseas" by Theophilus London, featuring Devonte Hynes and Solange Knowles... and thank you for flying Air Miss Moon! :)
Happy Monday, Everybody!!!! Did you miss me?!?! I certainly missed blogging desperately! My computer is not 100% yet, but it's out of intensive care! LOL
This week's Music Therapy with Miss Moon song choice is one that I hope will lift your spirits, and most importantly, I hope that it serves as an important reminder that nobody has domain over your joy. And with love (romantic love, brotherly love, sisterly love, familial love, and SELF love), every obstacle can be overcome and learned from. Personally, I think Solange sings about it far better than I could ever articulate, so I hope you all will enjoy "6 O'clock Blues".
6 O'Clock Blues
If my house flowed down in the river
If all of these walls tumble down in the storm
If this war took all of my money
All of my pride
But I'd never be poor
As long as we got each other
There's nothing in the world that can steal my joy
Yeah, As long as we got each other
We can overcome the badness of the world
'Cause people don't make the world go round like they used to
But I know if I got one thing
Baby I know got you
Yeah, you keep me sheltered through the six o'clock blues
And if I know one things going to be alright
Then I know that it's me and you (oh, oh)
So they say we're running out of time
We're running out of water
We're running out of light
We all got to many problems
And just not enough answers
But if we keep our own lives then they'll tell us what we like
Oh, but as long as we got each other
There's nothing in the world that can steal my joy
As long as we got each other (we can overcome)
We can overcome the badness of the world
They can sell me a story
And tell me we're in danger
But our love will never die
'Cause people don't make the world go round like they used to
But I know if I got one thing
Baby I know got you
You keep me sheltered through the six o'clock blues
Yeah, you keep me sheltered
Through the six o'clock
Yeah you keep me sheltered, sheltered, sheltered, sheltered
Baby if I know one thing
It's going to be all right
I know that I got my baby
Like the birds that live in the sky
We never have to worry
Cause somehow we'll get by
I've featured Solange Knowles a lot in this blog. Primarily because I think she's dope: Love her music, love her attitude, and I love love LOVE her style! I wasn't going to comment on this outfit (Despite my utter worship of it!), because I've mentioned her so much, but it truly was beyond my control.
I saw the photos of Solange at the grand opening of Dream Downtown, PH-D Rooftop Lounge and Marble Lane Restaurant here in NYC, and days after I had resigned myself not to do another outfit post, the outfit pieces jumped out at me everywhere I went! LOL I asked the peeps on the Miss Moon's Musings FaceBook page (Check it out if you haven') if I should do the post and the response was so positive, I felt compeled to change my mind and share the outfit I've created, inspired by Solange's look -
Top: Cassidy Cutout Top ($26.90 - $28.90, Alloy) Pants: ASOS CURVE Exclusive Belted Wide Leg Pants ($60.34, Asos) Pumps: Madden Girl Oyzter Pump ($39.95, DSW) Purse: Small Mock Croc Leatherette Handbag ($26.80, Forever 21) Earrings: Charming Life 22k Gold Overlay Smokey Quartz Bali Earrings (Starting at $17.49, Overstock.com)
To complete your look, be sure to rock a coral lip. A good color to start with is Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense Lipstick #38 ~ Satin Coral ($19, Sephora)
I am really digging this shade. Not too sure it would be a good fit for my complexion, but I plan on checking it out at my local Sephora to see how it looks on me.
There you have it!! How awesome would this outfit be on a informal first date, meeting for drinks? Sooo hot!!
Of course, if you end up taking over for the DJ, why not impress your date and keep the party people shouting?!?!? LOL
I love Solange Knowles: Her spirit is UNAPOLOGETICALLY FIERCE, Her music is AWESOME, and her style KICKS ASS!!!
I love this photo because only her nails, shoes, hair and beautiful smile are visible... but it's still stylish as hell!!!!
I've featured this outfit already in the past, but it continues to be a favorite of mine by Boxing Kitten. As an unofficial update to my post last year, upon reviewing the Boxing Kitten website, it looks like they still only go as high as a size 12, so it looks like I'm going to have to lose a lot of weight before I will be patronizing them... which sucks!
This look is truly giving me something I can feel, y'all!!!!!
Poppin' Pink Pin-up!!! I need to start learning how to style my hair like this with a scarf.... it'd be perfect for getting the hair off my neck in the summer!!!
I always refer to this look as "Chic Little Orphan Annie"... can you see what I mean? LOL
For those of you who (like me!) ::drooled:: over this gorgeous Masai-inspired beaded necklace by Noir Jewelry and you don't have $220.00 to spend on it (Also like me!)... Global Girlfriend has a comparable necklace for much less. I might still ask for this for my birthday... My family and divvy up and get it from all of them! LOL
The first time I saw this photo, I wasn't feeling what she was wearing.... After repeated glances at it, I admit it no longer just appeared busy to me (I guess I grew to see the big picture!) and now I love it!
A couple of weeks ago, I spotted a sequined moto jacket at Lane Bryant and thought to myself, "That's cute... but what the hell would I wear with that?!?" Thank you, Universe, and of course, Solange Knowles... for the answer!
I love the unconventional pairing of "clashing" patterns... that don't really clash when you take a good look. I'm not good at it yet, but I love to see when its been flawlessly executed.
I love this photo because in a sea of New York Fashion Community in black, Solange is a welcome splash of color, pattern, and texture.
How much do I love Solange in Gold and purple?!?!? How much do I want to recreate this look!?!? I am finding a pair of purple pumps and will find a lipstick to match, trust!!
I love the combination of colors in this look... it's cool, but it also has a fantasy-inspired sense of whimsy to me... it's like Fashion Week at the Shire!
Another stunning photograph from Solange's FashizBlack Spread.
Which one of Solange's looks is YOUR favorite?!?!? Leave a comment with your pick... I want to hear all about it!
My name is Audrey. I have been called many, many things. My Pirate Sistahs dubbed me Pirate Yemaya Chalice Moon, Mother of the Secret Realm (or Yemmy for short), which I remixed P-Diddy style into Miss Moon the Brooklyn Geechee. This blog is basically all about me and my life. I call it the rantings, ramblings and revelations of your average Brooklyn Geechee.
I have a lot of interests, and I admittedly get a bit dorky about them. So this blog will be about music, movies, politics, tv, getting healthy, and as Lisa Jones dubbed her book Bulletproof Diva (a must read!)... tales of race, sex, and hair.
I hope you like it. And if not, I welcome constructive criticism.
My only rule is be nice or leave.
